Educational Objectives

Pattern recognition is the clinical skill that separates confident orthodontic diagnosis from guesswork. This two-day symposium teaches general dental practitioners how to read the geometry of the face and jaws — the recurring patterns that predict how orthodontic treatment will unfold — and how to apply that knowledge directly in a digital workflow.

Day 1 builds the geometric foundation: skeletal patterns, dental arch geometry, and how diagnosis and treatment planning follow from what you see.

Day 2 puts it to work in the digital environment: reading records, understanding and approving setups on digital approver software, and managing cases from prescription to finish. Participants leave with a sharper clinical eye, stronger setup confidence, and a practical framework they can use the following Monday.

DAY 1 — The Geometry of the Face and Jaws

Day 1 is a full day on craniofacial geometry — the science that makes pattern recognition in orthodontics possible. Diagnosis and treatment planning are woven into each session so that clinical application follows directly from every concept covered.

SESSIONS INCLUDE:
1. The Geometric Framework of the Human
Face How the face follows predictable geometric patterns, the key proportional and angular relationships in the skull and jaws, and why understanding this framework changes how you diagnose.
2. Skeletal Patterns — Reading the Structure
Class I, II, and III patterns through a geometric lens; vertical and transverse relationships; live case review on screen.
3. Dental Arch Geometry — Pattern Recognition
Arch form, arch width, crowding, spacing, and rotation; how dental patterns reflect and sometimes mask the underlying skeletal geometry; live case review.
4. The Geometry of Tooth Movement — What Is Possible and What Is Not
The biological and structural limits of orthodontic movement; how the geometry of the arch defines what orthodontics can achieve; how to use this framework to set accurate patient expectations.
5. Putting It Together — From Diagnosis to Treatment Plan
A full case worked through on screen, from geometric analysis to treatment plan; patient selection criteria for treatment; red flags for referral; open Q&A.

DAY 2 — The Digital Workflow

Day 2 is a full day on the digital side of orthodontics. Setup approval is woven throughout the day so that every digital skill connects directly to the clinical decision it supports.

SESSIONS INCLUDE:
6. The Digital Record — What You Are Actually Looking At
Reading intraoral scans, photographs, and radiographs together as one integrated picture; what the software measures vs. what it interprets; the minimum record set for confident treatment planning.
7. Understanding the Digital Setup
What a setup is actually simulating; how tooth movement is staged and sequenced; the geometry of a correct final result; reverse engineering solutions.
8. Setup Approval — The Clinical Checklist, Part 1
Overjet, overbite, arch coordination, midlines, and posterior occlusion; live setup review on screen.
9. Setup Approval — The Clinical Checklist, Part 2
Tooth movement limits, anchorage, root positions, and aligner tracking; live setup review continued; how to write a clear revision request.
10. The Prescription — Digital Practice
How the treatment plan becomes a prescription the clinic can follow; prescribing expansion, proclination, and IPR clearly; common errors and how to prevent them.
11. Chair-Side Management — From Delivery to Done
First delivery, progress appointments, non-tracking, finishing protocols, and retention.
12. Closing Session — Where Does Your Practice Go From Here?
A brief look at what a healthy GP ortho program looks like, the signals that tell you whether it is growing, and practical next steps participants can act on immediately.

For all ODQ member dentists, the continuing education policy states that each hour of theory training provides 1 CE unit, and each hour of hands-on training provides 2 CE units. For dental hygienists who are members of the OHDQ, the continuing education policy operates on the basis of hours of educational activity, whether theoretical or practical.

A credit card deposit is required to confirm your registration, with the balance due no later than 14 days before the course (unless you register within 30 days of the course, in which case full payment is required upon registration). The program content is subject to change without notice. A credit note will be issued if a written cancellation is received 21 days before the start of the course. The deposit amount for your order (registration) will be retained as a non-refundable credit, but transferable to a new transaction for one or more courses/services. In the case of full payment, 25% of the amount (corresponding to the usual deposit) will be retained as a credit on your account. The credit is valid for a period of 2 years following the cancellation. Any remaining balance will be forfeited if unused. As space is limited, no refunds or credit notes will be issued for cancellations made less than 21 days before the course.
